MARTIN COUNTY -- In a nation where more than one million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, Central Martin County is invited to celebrate life.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event in which teams of participants take turns walking the track overnight in an effort to fight cancer. This year's Relay For Life of Central Martin County will take place at Memorial Park on May 4-5.
At more than 4,900 Relay events nationwide, communities celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved one lost, and commit to fight back against the disease.
Relay For Life begins with a moving Survivors Lap at noon. This emotional lap honors the courage of all who have defeated cancer. Cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) join together to take the opening lap -- unified in victory and in hope.
The atmosphere of Relay For Life is one of camaraderie and celebration, providing an opportunity for cancer survivors and caregivers to pass the torch of hope on to those still battling cancer or those that might be touched by cancer in the future.
Cancer survivors or caregivers who would like to take part in the Relay For Life of Central Martin County, can call Tracy Henkes, American Cancer Society, Martin/Okeechobee Branch at (772) 287-7467 or visit www.RelayForLife.org. All survivors receive a free Relay For Life T-shirt.
