MARTIN COUNTY -- Fun Tours Travel has presented House of Hope with the first round of funds from Travel for the Troops, an event created to raise money to help struggling veterans in our community.
The House of Hope Veterans Fund has received $7,000 so far, and the total is expected to double once all pledges are collected.
Veterans have always been among the people helped by House of Hope, but this is the first time that the agency has established a fund specifically dedicated to helping veterans and their families. The fund will help cover such costs as rent, utilities and medicine.
Travel for the Troops was the brainchild of Fun Tours Travel owner Kathleen Padova and travel consultant Elaine Hirsch.
"We have a monthly travel trade show, and we thought we'd like to do something more meaningful," said Ms. Padova. "We also take part in a lot of charitable events, but we thought we'd like to have our own event."
The first-time event was held Feb. 7 in the Palm Room at Harbour Bay Plaza in Sewall's Point. It offered attendees the chance to shop for travel deals from about 20 cruise lines and tour operators. Renato's, The Prawnbroker, Importico Bakery and Polka European Market & Deli provided food. DJ Dennis from Devine Entertainment supplied the entertainment, and a silent auction featured wine tasting, a big-screen TV, a computer, artwork, dining, wine and pampering packages.
Fun Tours Travel also offered a special grand prize drawing for a luxury cruise for two, won by Mary Kay Buckridge.
