MARTIN COUNTY -- Residents will have the chance to have their dog be one of many to help raise funds for the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast by participating in its sixth annual Mutt Derby.
More than 100 dogs will race down a track starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. Admission for dog lovers and owners is free, but the four-legged friend will cost $10 if they want to be part of the derby-racing fun.
The event is presented by Seacoast National Bank and hosted by the Fur Seasons, a luxury dog and cat boarding facility and pet spa. Other sponsors include Miller's Ale House and Hills/Science Diet.
On the day of the event, registration and check-in begin for dogs under 40 pounds at 8:15 a.m., and begins at 9:15 a.m. for dogs over 40 pounds.
All breeds and sizes are invited to compete, and will be grouped by weight. Each entrant will receive a certificate of participation and winners will receive prize ribbons.
In the first five years, the event has raised more than $35,000 to benefit pet care organizations in the community and in just 2012, raised more than $10,500.
There is much more going on at the event than the dog derby. There will also be pet presentation, an educational clinic discussing jumping, a swim party for the dogs, a silent auction and lots of pet-related vendors.
The sixth annual Mutt Derby will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 1310 S.W. Treasure Coast Commerce Way in Stuart. Admission is free. For more information, call (772) 286-8283.
