Local artist receives status

A member of Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, Lori Pitten-Jenkins, has been awarded the prestigious American Watercolor Society Signature status in the American Watercolor Society. Ms. Jenkins' winning artwork, "Prawns on Prongs," will be part of the 146th Annual International exhibition in New York this year.

Each year, the society holds a juried exhibition of watercolor artists throughout the world.

To become a signature member, an artist must be accepted into two shows, then apply for signature status and be accepted into a third show. This allows the artist to use the initials AWS following his or her signature. Each artist may only submit one piece of art each year. In 2008, Jenkins' piece, entitled "Crustacean Frustration," was accepted for exhibition; and in 2012 "A Decided Fate" was accepted.

Ms. Jenkins lives and creates in Melbourne, where she specializes in fine art watercolor painting.

Being a Florida native is reflective in her subjects, highlighting the unique treasures that Florida has to offer.

She has been an artist all of her life and received her formal training in studio art from Florida State University.

Ms. Jenkins is the president of the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, located in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne. She is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society and Southern Watercolor Society.

Her most recent awards include the 2012 Melbourne Art Show First place Watercolor, 2012 Mount Dora Art Festival Award of Excellence, the 2012 Space Coast Art Show Second place Watercolor, the 2012 Santa Fe 2D Award of Excellence, the Halifax Art Festival Award of Distinction and the 2012 Artworks Max Spector Memorial Award.

To see more of Ms. Jenkins' work, visit the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery at 1470 Highland Ave., in Melbourne or go to her website at www.loripittenjenkins.com.

Anything can happen in the 'woods'

The Melbourne Civic Theatre presents "Into the Woods," with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, produced by special arrangement with Music Theater International.

The Brothers Grimm hit Broadway with an epic fairytale where worlds collide. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece and rare modern classic.

The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.

When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.

Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

One of Sondheim's most popular works, "Into the Woods" is a musically sophisticated show.

The musical will run Friday, March 22 through Sunday, April 28, every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Casting for "Into the Woods" includes Randy Caldwell (Narrator), Leslie Hayford (Cinderella), Daniel Grest (Jack), Donna Furfaro (Jack's Mother), Dana Blanchard (Baker), Vanessa Munns-Quigley  (Baker's Wife), Pam Quenzler (Cinderella's Stepmother), Becky Behl-Hill and Emily Pickens (Cinderella's Step-Sisters) Tori Terhune  (Little Red Ridinghood), Brenda Sheets (Witch), Tracey Thompson  (Cinderella's Mother), Randy Caldwell (Mysterious Man), Bryce Niehaus (Wolf), Tracey Thompson (Granny), Evita Clowney (Rapunzel), Chris Rye (Rapunzel's Prince), Bryce Niehaus (Cinderella's Prince),David Diaz (Steward), Deanna Dickman (Snow White) and Pamela J. Bell (Sleeping Beauty).

Artistic Director Peg Girard said, "Although children (8 and older) are certain to love this show because of its recognizable characters and the colorful scenery and costumes, adults will find it to be a tale about community responsibility and parents and the legacy they pass on. Obviously, it's a great show that will appeal to everyone on different levels."

The production is being directed by Peg Girard, with musical direction by John Kurowski. Holly McFarland serves as choreographer. Technical Direction is by Alan Selby, and lighting design for "Into the Woods" is by Alan Selby and Scott Sutherland. Resident Costumer Alice Henning provides the costume design, with the wolf costume by Eldona Mellen. Set Design is by Gary Postlethwait.

Melbourne Civic Theatre is at LeGallerie Plaza, 817 E. Strawbridge Ave., Melbourne.

Tickets for adults cost $25, with a senior/military/student cost of $23.

Local artists win awards

Three Fifth Avenue artists have won awards at the 18th Annual Brevard Watercolor Society "Splash" art show held in late February in Melbourne.

Beth-Anne Fairchild won the Strawbridge Art League award, and Lori Jenkins and Witha Lacuesta both won merchandise awards from Martin F. Weber Company.

The show was judged by artist Edie Showalter Fagan, an internationally known artist from Winter Park.

Brevard Watercolor Society is one of the largest watercolor societies and has, as members, some of the most awarded artists in the country.

The society uses proceeds from the show to promote art education both to members and local schools.

Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, the premier member-operated gallery in Brevard County, was established in 1975.

The gallery is located at 1470 Highland Ave., in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, across the street from the Foosaner Art Museum.
