'A Grand Night For Singing'

The Henegar Center for the Arts in Melbourne's downtown theatre district is announcing a change in its current season of shows.

"A Grand Night For Singing," the Tony Award-nominated musical revue by Rodgers and Hammerstein, will run March 8-24.

The musical replaces "Sunset Boulevard," which the Henegar looks forward to producing in the future.

Taste and imagination, the two key ingredients for a first-rate revue, abound in this fresh take on the Rodgers & Hammerstein canon, conceived by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie.

"A Grand Night For Singing" opened the 1994 Broadway season with flair and distinction, earning two Tony nominations, including Best Musical.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's founding fathers probably never imagined "Shall We Dance?" as a comic pas de deux for a towering beauty and her diminutive admirer, nor did they suspect that one day a lovelorn young lad might pose the musical question. "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" But that's precisely the kind of invention lavished upon this revue, with innovative musical arrangements, including a sultry Andrews Sisters-esque "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair," a swingin' "Honeybun," worthy of the Modernaires, and a jazzy "Kansas City," which leaves no question about how terrifically up to date the remarkable songs of R&H remain.

Featuring beloved songs from "The King and I," "South Pacific," "State Fair" and more, the play provides new life for these signature songs, echoing the timelessness of Rodgers and Hammerstein's work. Don't miss this magical, musical revue at The Henegar Center for the Arts.

A Grand Night For Singing begins on March 8 and runs through March 24 on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. at the Henegar Center for the Arts, 625 E. New Haven Ave., in Melbourne's Downtown Theatre District.

Tickets cost $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and $16 for students, plus handling fees. Reserved tickets may be purchased at the Henegar Center Box Office Monday through Friday.

Patrons who have reserved seats for "Sunset Boulevard" may use their tickets for "A Grand Night For Singing." No exchange is needed.

This allows the artist to use the initials AWS following his or her signature. Each artist may only submit one piece of art each year.
