One of Disney's newest theatrical productions musical, "The Little Mermaid Jr." officially opens at the Athens Theatre Friday, March 8, and is hoping to be a big "part of your world."

The classic Disney title contains all of the songs from the Academy Award winning animated feature film as well as three new songs from the Broadway show.

"The Little Mermaid Jr." takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she's the girl with the perfect voice.

Directed by Craig Uppercue (the same artistic director for Hairspray and Scrooge the Musical), the musical features an all Central Florida cast of more than 50 experienced actors between 4 and 40 years old from Flagler County, Volusia County and the Orlando/Sanford/Mount Dora areas.

"Mermaid" stars Savannah Rucks as Ariel, David Anthony Garcia as Prince Eric, David Santiago as King Triton, Wyatt Rucks as Flounder, Anna Tolvo as Scuttle, Marcello Flutie as Chef Louis, Xavier Jackson as Sebastian and, continuing in the Broadway tradition of having a male performer, David McCarthy as Ursula.

Adapted from Disney's 2008 Broadway production, the show features the hit songs "Part of Your World," "She's in Love," and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea."

Nine performances are planned March 8-17 at the historic Athens Theatre in downtown DeLand at 124 N. Florida Ave. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 to $20 and available by calling (386) 736-1500, online at AthensDeland.com, or at Elusive Grape at 133 N. Woodland Blvd. Group discounts are available.
