MARTIN COUNTY -- The Single Fin Showdown presented by Ohana Surf Shop has quickly become one of Florida's largest one-day amateur surf contests and for good reason.

The unique surf contest draws its popularity by pairing competitors with vintage surfboards at random while at the same time raising money for United Way of Martin County.

"This is a contest where everyone wins. From the businesses that support it, to each of the surfers who compete in it, to the United Way agencies that benefit from the dollars raised," said Jordan Schwartz, contest director and owner of Ohana Surf Shop. "It's just an all-around fun day at the beach for the entire family."

Led by Schwartz's philanthropic sprit, the Showdown has raised more than $20,000 during the past four years for United Way that supports health and human service programs at 46 local nonprofit agencies.

The 2013 Single Fin Showdown begins at 8 a.m. on March 16 at the south end of Stuart Beach, 889 N.E. Ocean Blvd., in Stuart, and features seven divisions for surfers of all ages. Registration is $45 per competitor and includes a hat, as well as a chance to win one of many prize packs loaded with all kinds of surf-related gear.

For more information, call (772) 287-0041 or visit OhanaSurfShop.com to register.
