INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is requesting donations of pet food to help replenish its community Pet Food Bank.
In addition to helping pet parents who have signed up with the Humane Society, the Pet Food Bank aids pet lovers who obtain assistance through local agencies including Meals on Wheels, Harvest Food Outreach and The Source.
"Many families with pets struggle to provide for both themselves and their pets," said Maria Ramirez, Humane Society director of animal care. "Some people skimp on their own needs in order to feed their animals."
All dog, cat and small animal food items will be gratefully accepted. Contributions of opened bags of dry food will also be taken since all food is checked and re-packaged prior to distribution.
Donations can be made at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach, the Humane Society thrift shop in Vero Beach, located at 4445 20th St. or the Humane Society thrift shop in Sebastian, located at 441 Sebastian Blvd (Rt. 512). County residents facing financial difficulties who are in need of pet food should apply for assistance at the Humane Society.
The shelter also has special animal spay/neuter and wellness programs for pet owners under financial hardship.
