Community yard sale: There will be a community yard sale at Woodland Estates on south Highway A1A, in Melbourne Beach, Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come early to find treasures of antiques, glassware, bedroom sets, tools, appliances, plants, children's bikes, books, crafts, fishing supplies, household items and other items.

Hitting, catching clinic: Mario Garza, New York Yankees minor league manager; and Hector Rabago, New York Yankees minor league player, will present a hitting/catching clinic, hosted by the West Melbourne Eagles at The Elite Athletes Training Academy, 3840 W. Eau Gallie Blvd., Melbourne, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

This clinic will benefit the nonprofit organization, The Little Warrior Foundation.  This organization prepares gift baskets for children and families of children in hospitals here in Florida, and also hand selects various missionary efforts to support globally.

Award-winning author to present workshop: Spacecoast Authors of Romance invites you to join them, as they welcome Kathy Gilles Seidel, award-winning author and lecturer.

Ms. Seidel has a Ph.D. in English literature from Johns Hopkins, and her previous novels have won every major romance-market award.

She'll be presenting an all-day workshop, titled "How To Make Your Happy Endings Happier."

'Art and Animals in the Park:' Brevard County Parks & Recreation and the Friends of Erna Nixon Park will host the third annual "Art and Animals in the Park" event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Erna Nixon Park, 1200 Evans Road, West Melbourne.

Parking will be available at the Melbourne Square Mall parking lot at Pole No. 4, on the west side of JC Penney. A free shuttle bus will be available to transport visitors to and from the park.

Admission is $1, and all proceeds benefit the Friends of Erna Nixon Park.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Art in the Park will provide an opportunity to stroll through one of Brevard County's hidden gems and view locally made art focused on the beauty of nature. Participating artists and photographers will be in attendance to display, sell and talk to the public about their nature-themed art.

A silent auction will feature pieces donated by artists and photographers. Food will be available for purchase. There will also be animal groups on hand giving presentations throughout the event.

Alzheimer's presentation: Health First Aging Services' Center for Family Caregivers welcomes Dr. Peter V. Rabins for a special presentation.

Dr. Rabins, regarded by the medical profession as a national leader in the care of Alzheimer's disease, is co-author of "The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer's Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later Life."

SUNDAY, FEB. 24

Second annual charity bike event: Infinity Racing Organization Inc., a cycling association focused on supporting the local community in Brevard County, has announced the second annual Gran Fondo Brevard on Sunday, Feb. 24.

The "Fondo," a special format charity bike ride event, will give riders the opportunity to compete in a timed course all throughout Brevard beginning at 7:30 a.m. to and from Viera High School in Viera.

The ride has four routes: 112.8 (Gran Fondo), 74.2 (Medio Fondo), 55 (Piccolo Fondo) and 20 (Mini Fondo) miles, which includes one of the longest, most challenging courses in the state, and the most scenic and diverse roads in the southeast region.

The bike course will challenge the stamina of riders of all skill levels, among them six-time Tour de France and former national champion, Kevin Livingston and Pro Cyclist, former USPRO Criterium National Champion, and founder of the Bahati Foundation, Rahsaan Bahati and Ivan Dominguez, former USA Crits World Champion, stage winner in the Tour of California, two-time stage winner in the Tour of Missouri, and stage winner during the Tour of Georgia, amongst many other wins.

Along with the cycling event, this year there will be a 5K Gran Fundo Walk/Run that will go around Viera High School and back.

Following both events will be an after-party to include various local food, retail and service vendors. There will be several athletic and health-testing activities available geared towards improving the health and well being of all the attendees!

All proceeds of Gran Fondo Brevard will benefit KLD Youth Foundation, a nonprofit organization to provide outside-of-school programs to address the growing problem of unsupervised youths in Brevard County. The KLD mission is to change lives by educating and empowering young people, one life at a time. Mechanical and SAG support will be provided along with pre, during and post ride food and refreshments for all who participate.

Gran Fondo is an Italian term, which loosely translates to "Big Ride." Gran Fondos are long distance, mass-participation cycling events - not races - and participation ranges from professionals to recreational cyclists.

Handgun safety and training class: This one-day, six-hour course includes class instruction and a live fire shooting component at a local gun range. A personal firearm is not required.

The course covers essentials of firearm safety, proper handling of firearms, loading and unloading handguns, proper shooting techniques, self defense vs. range shooting and state regulations for transportation and use of firearms (both with and without a concealed weapons license.

The course satisfies and exceeds training requirements to obtain a Florida Concealed Weapons License.

Registration must be completed in person at the DRS Community Center, 1089 S. Patrick Drive, Satellite Beach, prior to the date of class. Participants must be at least 18 years old to register.

Cost of registration is $45 per person, plus a $1 administrative fee. Only cash or check accepted - no credit cards, with separate fees paid day of, for range and ammunition.

The class will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 or Sunday, March 17 at the center.

Launch or stay home and read?: The weather sets the stage for your activities every day. Whether boating, or just living on the Space Coast, the more you know about the weather, the better control you have over when and where you might want to go, or what you might want to do. Take action to gain the confidence and control that knowledge of weather gives you.

The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, is announcing the weather course.

This class is not limited to boaters; this information is valuable to everyone, particularly those living close to the ocean and the Indian River Lagoon.

In this course, taught by a professional meteorologist students will become keen observers of the weather by learning the basic principles of meteorology - the science of the atmosphere.

The course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move and interact with one another and reflects the availability of a variety of weather reports and forecasts on the Internet.

The class includes a tour of the National Weather Service facility in Melbourne.

The first class meets on Wednesday, March 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The class will consist of approximately 10 two-hour classroom sessions.  The class meets at Keiser University, the Corner of NASA and Babcock streets, in Melbourne.

Cost is $80 for U.S. Power Squadron members, $110 for non-members and $159 for the class and a one-year membership to Banana River Sail & Power Squadron.

Additional family members from the same household, sharing manual pay $20 each.

Circuit training style class at the park: At 9 a.m. every Monday and Friday morning a new revolution is taking place.

Body Revolution, offered by Cassandra Wyzik, owner of Fit With Cassandra, is a new circuit training style class that places emphasis on using bodyweight, functional movements and fun fitness challenges to get participants sweating.

The class is being held at the gazebo near the entrance to Gleason Park in Indian Harbour Beach.

Cost is $6 per class or $40 per month, and classes last one hour each.

Bodyweight training was recently named the No. 1 fitness trend by the American College of Sports Medicine for 2012.

Participants can expect to see some equipment present at Body Revolution, namely fun noodles, hula hoops, cones, resistance bands, bean bag, free weights and more.

Ketcham Leadership Icon Award and the Leadership Brevard Distinguished Alumni Award at the 2013 LEAD Brevard Leadership Awards event on Friday, March 1 at the Studio Theater at the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, in Melbourne.

The Rodney S. Ketcham Leadership Icon Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates a history of vision, service and leadership for the betterment of Brevard.

The 2013 recipient is Bernard W. Simpkins.  Previous recipients include Dr. Maxwell C. King, Mr. Roger Dobson, Ms. Marylyn "Bunny" Finney and Ms. Barbara Moore.

Registration dates for serious ballet students: The Galmont Ballet has released the dates for its Summer Intensive Program of June 17 to July 12.

Registration is in progress, now through April 15.

There will be classes for beginner through intermediate, intermediate through advanced and adult classes.

The four-week programs are classically based, with emphasis in both ballet and contemporary dance, with an average of 15-20 classes per week.

Dancers in the Summer Intensive Program have the opportunity to perform in a final performance that will showcase selections from repertoire and new choreography created during the program.

The largest recreational vehicle show in Central Florida: The 2013 Central Florida RV Show will be held again at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand, Thursday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 3.

Sponsored by the Florida RV Trade Association, Region 4, the Central Florida RV Show promises to be bigger and better than ever.

There will be new and used RV units on display, representing more than 150 manufacturers and suppliers.

RV sales have typically been an indicator of the end of a recession as consumers have more confidence in making a major luxury item purchase.

In addition, a successful national marketing campaign targeting Baby Boomers with children is credited with spurring the keen interest in RVs and the RV lifestyle.

A favorite to all visitors is the supplier's area with displays providing equipment and accessories to help outfit campers or provide information on where to camp. Items include new braking systems, specialized camping equipment and engine performance enhancers.

Youth clubs seek new members: The Brevard County Extension Service is looking to recruit new members for two of its clubs - the horse and cooking club, both of which meet in Cocoa.

4-H is a life skills development program that teaches youth how citizenship, teamwork and leadership skills. Youth learn about a particular project area (horses, cooking), while participating in educational activities and recreation related to that topic. 4-H allows youth opportunities to not only learn but also exhibit and compete in many areas.

Spring dinner auction: St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church will host its first annual "Wish Upon a Star" dinner auction on Friday, March 1, starting at 5 p.m. at the Suntree Country Club located in Melbourne.

The event is planned to be St. John's largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to the building fund, which will be utilized to construct the new church.

This event is being planned by a committee that will be chaired by local residents and parishioners Ernie and Tina Euler.

Youth foundation golf classic: The Brevard County 4-H Youth Foundation is hosting its ninth annual golf classic on Saturday, March 2 at Suntree Country Club.

The event kicks off with a barbecue on Friday, March 1, followed by a day on the challenge course with lunch and door prizes.

4-H is a youth program that spans a multitude of project areas where youth learn leadership, citizenship and teamwork skills.

The 4-H Foundation supports youth by providing scholarship opportunities at local, statewide and national events.

All proceeds from the event benefit youth, as they strive for excellence in project areas, such as: animal (horse, beef, poultry), shooting sports (archery, muzzleloading), environmental education, sewing and public speaking.

Chorus presents annual musical show: The award-winning Platinum Coast Chorus, Brevard County's local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, will present its annual show, titled "Magic in the Attic."

The event will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 2 p.m. at the Eau Gallie High School Auditorium, 1400 Commodore Blvd, in Melbourne.

The featured guests will be So Divine, a dynamic quartet of young women, who are rising stars in Sweet Adelines and who represented Florida's District 9 at the SAI International Competition 2012 in Denver.

The Sweet Adelines sing and entertain its local audiences with four-part, a cappella, barbershop harmony, which is delightfully presented in this themed story, that includes various musical songs, from past to present.

Free caregiver education: Hospice of St. Francis will be offering caregiver education and resource classes for current and future caregivers and family and/or friend helpers in three upcoming sessions of the six 90-minute classes.

The class dates and locations are as follows:

  March 3, 8, 12, 15, 19 and 22, Tuesdays and Fridays, 1-2:30 p.m. at the Martin Andersen Senior Center, 1025 S. Florida Ave., Rockledge.

April 3, 5, 10, 12, 17 and 19, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Hospice of St. Francis, 4875 N. Wickham Road, Suite 104, Melbourne.

April 30, May 3, 7, 10, 14 and 17, Tuesdays and Fridays, 1-2:30 p.m. at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Office, 2309 Holder Road, Mims.

All classes were developed nationally in response to the issues caregivers, themselves, identified.

Each class focuses on different issues a caregiver will face.

Hospice of St. Francis' programs and training classes are offered at no cost to Brevard County residents.

Car, truck and motorcycle show: Satellite Beach Lion's Club Second Annual Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show is Sunday, March 10, at the DRS Community Center, 1089 S. Patrick Drive, Satellite Beach, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost is $20 to enter a vehicle. Pre-register by mail or 8 a.m. the day of the event.

Dash plaques will go to the first 75 registered vehicles.

There will be a slow drag contest at noon ($5 additional entry fee).
