MARTIN COUNTY -- Martin County's March for Babies co-chairs, Chris Stapleton of IVOX and Heidi Monsour of Junior League of Martin County, hosted the 2013 campaign kick-off at Indian Riverside Park on Jan. 31.
In commemoration of March of Dimes 75th anniversary, this year's kick-off event featured the "Best Celebration Cake" contest, an opportunity for local bakers to display their most creative and delicious cakes, cupcakes or cake-pops.
The winners were; Kim Polhemus of Stuart for Best Celebration Cake, and Susan Carpino and Darlene Higgins of Sweet Cakes for Best Celebration Small Cakes.
Publix Super Markets won the fan favorite award and the judges recognized Giovanna Roballo of Sugar Mama Cakes & Sweets with an honorable mention for advanced decorating skills.
Jackie Holfelder and Gena McCown served as judges for the event, scoring each creation on decoration, taste and creativity. Following the judging, all entries were then raffled off to event attendees to raise funds for March of Dimes programs.
During the kick-off, March for Babies team members representing Publix Super Markets, SeaCoast Bank, Martin Memorial Health Systems, Martin County Schools, FP&L, Stroller Strides, Junior League of Martin County and several family teams learned about the many medical advances that March of Dimes has been responsible for during the past 75 years.
The 2013 Martin County March for Babies will be held April 27 at Memorial Park in Stuart. The three-mile walk will begin at 8 a.m. The March for Babies is a family event and will feature fun spirit stations along the walk, as well as a Kid's Corner and breakfast provided by IHOP at the finish line.
