BREVARD -- Brevard County residents can now receive help with filing their taxes this tax season -- without a hefty fee.
United Way of Brevard and AARP are offering free help with tax preparation at 12 sites throughout the Space Coast through April 15.
Belinda Stewart, communications manager for 2-1-1 Brevard, a United Way-supported nonprofit that operates a telephone-based helpline, said she hopes members of the community will take advantage of this free offer, which the organization has offered for many years.
"Lots of people in our community don't take advantage of the options they have for filing their taxes," she said. "People with lower incomes also don't always know all the options available. We just want to help people get back the most money they can."
The locations providing free tax help in Brevard are Brevard Workforce in Rockledge and Palm Bay, Central Brevard Library in Cocoa, Cocoa Beach Library, Melbourne Library (by appointment only), Merritt Island Library, Port St. John Library, Salvation Army in Melbourne, Satellite Beach Library, Space Coast Credit Union in Indian Harbour Beach, Titusville Library and West Melbourne Library.
When attending a free tax help session, organizers said residents must bring all forms from employers, interests and dividend statements from banks, social security cards or number verification letters for all persons listed on the tax returns, photo identification, bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit, checkbook, day care expenses, with the providers EIN and amount paid, and any other relevant information about income and expense.
Times at each location differ.
