FORT PIERCE -- In his decades of owning businesses in St. Lucie County, Gary of Discount Video Too understands the importance of a niche market.
"I've been in video rentals for 30 years," he said. "But I couldn't compete with the larger video-rental franchises that came to the area. So I focused my video sales and rentals on the adult market."
Now, in his store in Fort Pierce, thousands of adult movies on videotape cassette and DVD fill the shelves from floor to ceiling. All the movies are both for rent and for sale. And right now, regularly priced DVDs are on sale for 50 percent off the regular price.
"I'm the only one who still carries VHS tapes," he said. "While a lot of the movies can now be found on both VHS and DVD, not every movie was converted to DVD."
In fact, one of his services includes being able to fill special requests of specific movies.
"I can find titles for people," he said. "I've become very knowledgeable about the adult-movie genre, the actors and the directors. I know my stuff."
His first store was called Discount Video and Computers. When he decided to specialize in adult movies, he closed it briefly, and when opened again, Discount Video Too was born.
Now his focus is keeping his product affordable and his customers happy.
"When people don't have any money, I don't have any money," he said.
To help with that, he is currently offering a 50 percent discount for any regularly priced DVD in the store. There is no limit to how many customers can purchase.
For those who prefer to rent, his weekly promotion is to rent three movies and get a fourth free.
There is an age restriction, however. Only adults 19 and older can enter the part of the store where the adult movies are kept.
Looking ahead, he doesn't see himself doing anything else.
"This has grown to be a larger market of customers for me," he said. "And I enjoy keeping my customers smiling."
Discount Video Too is located at 3223 S. U.S. 1 in Fort Pierce. The business is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is closed on Sunday.
