MARTIN COUNTY -- Walter Woods, real estate and estate planning attorney, has been elected as the new chairman of the board of directors of the Elliott Museum.
He will succeed immediate past Chairwoman Debra Duvall.
In addition, Peter Upton has been elected vice chairman, Fernando Giachino is secretary and Kevin Youngblood continues as treasurer.
Mr. Woods has an extensive background in volunteer leadership positions with key non-profits on the Treasure Coast. He is a graduate of Martin County High School and received his bachelor's and law degree from the University of Alabama.
"Like so many of us on the Treasure Coast, the Elliott Museum holds a special place in my heart," said Mr. Woods. "To be a part of re-launching this exciting cultural resource is truly humbling. It's an exciting time for our whole community."
After undergoing a $20 million re-building, the Elliott Museum, located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, will feature a 3,000- square-foot changing exhibition gallery that will feature international travelling exhibits; seven dedicated permanent collection gallery spaces; an expanded art and teaching Studio; a community history lab; Thurlow Library and archives and the Frances Langford Outrigger Café.
The first exhibit in the changing exhibition gallery will be "Leonardo da Vinci Machines in Motion," a dramatic, hands-on display of 40 full-size machine replicas made directly from da Vinci's innovative designs and drawings.
The museum, a 51-year-old Martin County institution, has undergone a major re-visioning, as well.
Focusing on art, history and technology, the new Elliott Museum aims to tell the rich story of the region, capture the spirit of innovation that has left an indelible mark on the American psyche and celebrates the power of originality.
