MARTIN COUNTY -- The YMCA of the Treasure Coast is now offering dance classes as part of its regular programming.
In a space well-known for gymnastics and skating, recreational dance has now found a home at the Y, SportsWorld location off of Willoughby Boulevard in Stuart.
Through a newly formed collaboration with the Florida Arts and Dance Co., the Y has opened registration for two new programs so more children can have the opportunity to attend dance classes.
The Y and Florida Arts and Dance formed this collaboration because they share a belief in developing spirit, mind and body through physical activity.
"Dance is important to young people because it builds self-esteem, confidence, teaches teamwork and dedication. Dancers learn how to move to music and they also learn spatial awareness," said Joann Gallagher, FADC board president.
"Our collaboration is a unique framework to express our common cause related to youth development and healthy living," said Christine Coller, Y's chief operations officer.
"Both organizations have a shared commitment to bring dance into the lives of more children on the Treasure Coast."
The two classes, starting in January, will complement the programs already offered at FADC. A ballet class and a hip-hop- type class will be offered. The Y hopes to expand its dance offerings if these classes are well-received. The programs at the Y will be recreational in nature and are meant for beginner dancers.
FADC has a vision to enhance cultural awareness through classical ballet and dance instruction. To Ms. Gallagher, the partnership just makes sense.
"FADC will increase its student base and maximize its impact on the community," Ms. Coller said. "The Y is now able to offer their members the opportunity to an affordable dance education and quality performance opportunities without the expense of developing and implementing such a program."
Dance and the Y are a natural marriage and have been included nationally as a core Y program since 1998.
"What a great way to help Y kids and families discover and develop limitless possibilities in the form of dance," said Ms. Coller. "Kids of all ages enjoy the Y and now they will be able to appreciate dance as a lifelong activity for self-expression, strength, agility, creativity and balance. These new classes are a perfect fit for our Y kids."
The new dance classes began Jan. 21.
