TREASURE COAST -- As the number of flu cases continues to rise, the Florida Department of Health is urging residents and visitors to get vaccinated against the flu and use preventative measures.
Residents can contact their private provider or visit one of the many community agencies offering the vaccine.
Symptoms of the flu include fever, severe cough, sore throat, runny nose and body aches. Contact your primary care physician if you suspect that you have the flu. Antiviral medication may shorten both the duration and severity of illness.
Practice prevention:
Get vaccinated against the flu. It's recommended that everyone older than of 6 months get vaccinated.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your cough and sneeze. Cough and sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue. Throw the tissue into the trash after you use it.
Stay home when you are sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If you experience flu-like illness, contact your primary care physician.
