The New Smyrna Beach branch of the American Association of University Women is currently accepting scholarship applications.
To qualify, women must be residents of New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill or Samsula, and must expect to be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning for the fall semester of 2013. The awards are based on academic achievement, community activities or service, leadership and financial need.
Application forms are available at the guidance offices of New Smyrna Beach High School, Spruce Creek High School, and Daytona State College or by contacting Betty Weber AAUW Scholarship chairperson at (386) 423- 0871.
All applications must be returned by March 1, to be considered for scholarship.
Contest winners named
The New Smyrna Beach Garden Club named the winners of the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contest co-sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Club.
A committee chaired by Sallie Spurney reviewed 48 entries from Chisholm and Coronado Elementary School first to fifth graders.
Chisholm first place was awarded to Sofia Miranda, second place to Madelyn Schneider, and third place to Thea Gallagher. Coronado first place was awarded to Gwynnie Peterson, second place to Jessica Henning, and third place to Sara Pearson. Each winner received a cash award.
Both first place winning entries will be submitted to the Florida Federated Garden Club for the state competition.
