MARTIN COUNTY -- The American Cancer Society will host a team party, Relay for Life carnival, for the 2013 Relay For Life of Central Martin County on Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Blue Door Coffee Bar, 38 S.E. Osceola St.
In 2012, Relay For Life raised more than $20 million for the Florida division of the American Cancer Society.
The 2013 Relay For Life Central Martin County will be held on May 4-5, starting at noon at Memorial Park, 100 East Ocean Blvd., Stuart.
Relay For Life began with one man in Tacoma, Wash., in 1985 and is now a worldwide movement to end cancer, with 4,960 events across America that raised has a total of $4.5 billion to date. These funds help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of eliminating cancer as a major health concern.
In honor of those who battle cancer 24-hours a day, team members typically take turns walking tracks throughout the day and night. For those not walking, there is constant action to keep everyone busy. From entertainment, food and games to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay For Life.
At each event, participants celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer through the survivor's lap and survivor recognition. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight.
Participants also remember loved ones lost to the disease, and honor those who have survived and are currently battling the disease with the luminaria ceremony.
At the event, people who have walked alongside those battling cancer can grieve and find healing. Relay helps individuals make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.
