Congratulations to John Carroll High School teachers and coaches Frank and Julie Irizarry for their successful competitions at the Florida Senior Track and Field championship held in Lakeland.
The Florida Senior Games are an annual state championship for track and field athletes over age 50.
Ms. Irizarry won the gold medal in her age group for the women's 1,500 meter run and pole vault competition, which earned her the new state record for the 50-54 age group. John Carroll High School is extremely proud of this accomplishment, especially as Ms. Irizarry just recently started learning the sport of pole vaulting.
Mr. Irizarry took bronze medals in the triple jump competition and 400-meter run, in addition to placing fourth in the pole vault competition and 200 meter race.
Both Mr. and Ms. Irizarry have now qualified for the 2013 national championship, which will be held this summer in Cleveland.
