Tennis lessons slated

The Greater Volusia Tennis League will conduct free tennis lessons from Jan. 21 to Feb. 3.

This is a free beginner group tennis lesson from a professional tennis instructor for adults 18 and older. Loaner racquets will be available. For more information, call one of the participating centers.

Fast pitch travel softball tryouts

Ormond Beach Lady Renegade fast pitch travel softball tryouts will be on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, softball quads, 700 Hull Road, Ormond Beach.

Tryouts are open to any girls ages 8-14 interested in playing competitive softball.

Tryout time for girls born in 2002-04 will be 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Tryout time for girls born in 2000-01 will be from noon to 2 p.m.

All girls age 14 may try out from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Club to host 'Rookie Day'

The Halifax Sport Fishing Club's second annual Rookie Day is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Riverside Pavilion in Port Orange.

There are presentations by club members on offshore, inshore, surf and pier fishing.

Club members will sell hotdogs and hamburgers as a club fundraiser during the lunch break.

Captain Lee Noga has been added to the all-day fishing seminar lineup. Capt. Noga will be doing a presentation on shrimping and scalloping in the East Central Florida area.

Fly fishing demo planned

The Mid-coast Flyfishers club meeting will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 14, at Fraternal Order of Police No. 40 Hall, 471 Old Mission Road, New Smyrna Beach.

Ron Winn from the Back Country Fly Fishing Association will demonstrate the use of synthetics in the tying of flies.

Mr. Winn will utilize various synthetics and show tips on its use. He will tie a finger mullet as well as a pilchard wide body fly. Both of these flies are good bait in this area. The methods can be used on any number of flies.

Basketball academy planned

DeLand Parks and Recreation will offer the DeLand Drive Basketball Academy for boys and girls ages 4-15.

Dates for the league are Jan 15-March 3 (age as of Sept. 1, 2012). The league is scheduled to operate at the Old DeLand High School Gym and the Chisholm Center.

Cost per child is $50 per participant ($3 non-resident fee). By joining the league, each participant will receive a team jersey, shorts and an award.

Parent volunteer coaches are needed. Registration starts now at DeLand Parks and Recreation office.

Winter adult softball league forming

DeLand Parks and Recreation will be offering a Winter Recreational Adult Softball League at DeLand's Sperling Sports Complex from the end of January through March.

Church, coed and men's division's will be offered with church playing Monday nights, men's playing Tuesday nights and coed playing Wednesdays. The league is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. All leagues will play an eight-game schedule.
