Organization raises funds for students to further their education in memory of deceased teen

By Chris Fish

BREVARD -- On July 7, 2010, while heading to have his senior picture taken, Myles Freeberg was in an automobile accident. He died the next day.

Since then, with the support of friends and the community, Myles' parents, Tom and Kathy Freeberg, have dedicated a foundation in their son's memory to help students throughout Brevard County further their education.

The Myles Freeberg Foundation, Inc., will be sponsoring the third annual Miles for Myles 5k Family Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Mr. Freeberg, president of the Myles Freeberg Foundation, said the event raises funds for internships and scholarships that are awarded to Brevard County high school students in Myles' memory.

"The most important aspect of the event is to gather with family and friends to celebrate Myles' life and to help other Brevard County high school students pursue their dream of a higher education," he said.

Myles was a student at Viera High School, who played soccer for both a club team and his high school.

As a left defender, Myles grew a reputation and garnered a nickname known as "The Wall." Since the accident, a memorial wall stands at the Viera High School campus in a garden near the cafeteria's outside seating area, so students can gather and hang out during lunch and throughout the day.

Mrs. Freeberg, treasurer of the Myles Freeburg Foundation, said that the organization owes a lot of credit to Hastings Kofkin, a senior at Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School. Hastings organized the first 5Kin the fall of 2010 when he was a sophomore.

While the fun run was being organized, Mrs. Freeberg and her husband began creating the Myles Freeberg Foundation, Inc., which would be approved that January.

"Without Hastings organizing (the first event), we wouldn't be doing any of this. It would have been just too much for us that year," she said. "We decided to continue with it, and, with the 5k, we give out all of the money we raise. I feel very blessed we are able to do that."

Since its inception, the Myles Freeberg Foundation has awarded six internships through the Viera High School Academy of Business and Finance and 21 scholarships through the Brevard County Schools Foundation.

At last year's event, the foundation raised $15,500 with more than 400 people participating in the 5K.

"(Our foundation) has evolved since we first started," Mrs. Freeberg said. "We are very pleased with how things have progressed."

The Freebergs said Myles was a friend to all, and many comments made on his Facebook page by friends and loved ones indicate that he was a very friendly person.

In perhaps what best solidifies Myles' passion for life, one of his final text messages he sent to a friend remains a phrase used by the foundation.

"I'm good...no problems...no stress...so the usual," he said.

The Miles for Myles 5K Family Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Viera High School track.

Registration for the event is $25.
